How the Face Shape Detector Measures Your Face
When you upload a photo, a small neural network first finds the face in the image. A second model then places 68 landmarks on it - precise points tracing your jawline, eyebrows, nose, eyes, and mouth. This is the same landmarking approach used in research and professional face analysis, compressed into a model small enough (about half a megabyte) to download once and run inside your browser tab.
From those 68 points, the detector takes four measurements and reduces them to ratios, so the result does not depend on how close you were to the camera or how many pixels the photo has. Your cheekbone width becomes the baseline of 1.00, and everything else is measured against it.
Each of the six face shapes has a characteristic set of ideal ratios. The tool computes how far your measured ratios sit from each shape's ideal and converts those distances into the percentage breakdown you see in the result. A 90% score means your geometry is almost a textbook example; two scores in the 40s mean you are a genuine blend - which is common, and worth knowing when you pick a haircut.
Face Length
The vertical distance from the chin to the hairline. The 68-point model stops at the eyebrows, so the tool estimates the forehead using the classic rule of facial thirds: brow-to-chin is roughly two thirds of the full face.
Cheekbone Width
The distance between the outermost points of the face at cheekbone height (landmarks 1 and 15). This is the reference measurement - every other width is expressed as a ratio of it.
Jaw Width & Angle
The distance between the jaw corners (landmarks 4 and 12), plus the angle the jawline turns through at each corner. The angle separates angular jaws (square) from soft, curved ones (round, oval).
Forehead Width
The distance between the outer ends of the eyebrows (landmarks 17 and 26), a reliable stand-in for forehead width at the brow line. A forehead wider than the cheekbones points strongly to a heart shape.
One honest caveat: no landmark model can see your hairline, so face length is estimated from the well-established rule of facial thirds rather than measured directly. If your forehead is unusually tall or short for your face, lean on the ratio numbers and the percentage spread rather than the single top answer.
The 6 Face Shapes, Defined by Geometry
Face shapes are not vibes - each one is a specific relationship between four measurements.
Oval
Face length is about 1.4-1.5x the cheekbone width, cheekbones are the widest point, the forehead is slightly narrower, and the jaw tapers gently to a rounded chin. Often called the most versatile shape because nearly every hairstyle and frame suits it.
Round
Length and width are nearly equal (ratio close to 1.1), with full cheeks and a soft, curved jawline. No sharp angles anywhere: the hairline is rounded and the chin blends into the jaw without a defined point.
Square
Forehead, cheekbones, and jaw measure almost the same width, and the face is not much longer than it is wide. The defining feature is the jaw: strong, angular corners and a flat chin line rather than a curve.
Heart
The forehead is the widest zone - as wide as or wider than the cheekbones - and the face tapers continuously to a narrow, often pointed chin. A widow's peak hairline makes the heart outline especially visible.
Oblong
Clearly longer than it is wide, with a length-to-cheekbone ratio around 1.6 or more, while forehead, cheeks, and jaw stay close to the same width. Sometimes called rectangular when the jaw is angular rather than rounded.
Diamond
Cheekbones are dramatically the widest point while both the forehead and jawline are narrow, ending in a pointed chin. The rarest of the six shapes - high, prominent cheekbones with a tapered hairline are the giveaway.
Two clarifications that save a lot of confusion. First, "rectangle" and "oblong" describe the same length-dominant geometry; some systems split them by jaw angularity, but the styling advice is identical. Second, a "triangle" or "pear" face - jaw wider than cheekbones and forehead - is rare enough that most systems, including this one, fold it into square or round depending on the jaw angle.
Hairstyles, Glasses, and Grooming for Every Face Shape
The logic behind all face-shape styling is the same: add visual width where the face is narrow, add length where it is short, and soften or sharpen lines to move toward balance.
Oval
- ›Hair: Almost any cut works: long layers, bobs, pixies, slick-backs, quiffs. The only real rule is to avoid heavy, straight-across fringes that cover the forehead and make the face read shorter and rounder than it is.
- ›Glasses: Most frames suit an oval face. Pick frames as wide as the widest part of the face and let the browline of the frame follow your own brows - wayfarers, rounds, and aviators all work.
- ›Beard / makeup: Beards: keep the cheek lines tidy and the length moderate; an oval face does not need corrective shaping. Makeup: skip heavy contouring - a touch of definition under the cheekbones is plenty.
Round
- ›Hair: Create vertical lines: height at the crown, longer layers past the chin, deep side parts. Avoid chin-length bobs with curled-under ends and full fringes, which add width exactly where the face is already widest.
- ›Glasses: Angular, rectangular, or geometric frames add the definition the face lacks. Avoid small, perfectly round frames that repeat the face's curves.
- ›Beard / makeup: Beards: grow length at the chin and keep the cheeks short - a beard is the easiest way to visually lengthen a round face. Makeup: contour the outer thirds of the face and blend blush slightly upward.
Square
- ›Hair: Soften the angles with waves, texture, and layers that start at the jaw or below. Side-swept fringes and off-center parts break the symmetry; blunt, jaw-length cuts emphasize the jaw's corners.
- ›Glasses: Round and oval frames counterbalance the strong jaw. Thin metal rims soften more than thick acetate. Avoid boxy frames with sharp corners that mirror the jawline.
- ›Beard / makeup: Beards: a rounded beard shape - circle beard or short boxed beard with softened corners - takes the edge off the jaw. Makeup: shade the corners of the jaw and highlight the center of the chin.
Heart
- ›Hair: Add fullness where the face is narrow: chin-length bobs, waves that kick out at the jaw, and side-swept fringes that shorten a wide forehead. Very short slicked-back styles put all the attention on the brow.
- ›Glasses: Bottom-heavy frames, rimless styles, or light-colored frames balance the wider upper face. Avoid oversized, top-heavy, or heavily decorated browline frames.
- ›Beard / makeup: Beards: fullness at the chin and jaw adds the lower-face weight a heart shape lacks. Makeup: a little shading at the temples and a soft highlight on the chin rebalance the outline.
Oblong
- ›Hair: Add width, not height: side-swept or full fringes shorten the face, and waves or curls at the sides broaden it. Avoid extra volume on top and very long, one-length hair that drags the face downward.
- ›Glasses: Tall lenses and oversized frames break the vertical line. A strong browline or decorative temples add useful horizontal emphasis. Avoid short, narrow lenses.
- ›Beard / makeup: Beards: keep chin length short and let the sides grow fuller - the opposite of the round-face strategy. Makeup: sweep blush horizontally across the cheeks rather than up toward the temples.
Diamond
- ›Hair: Balance the wide cheekbones by adding volume at the forehead and the jaw: side-swept fringes, chin-length bobs, and styles tucked behind the ears show the cheekbones without exaggerating them.
- ›Glasses: Cat-eye shapes and frames with detailing or a strong browline visually widen the forehead. Rimless and oval frames also work. Avoid narrow frames that pinch the mid-face.
- ›Beard / makeup: Beards: fullness along the jaw fills out the narrow lower third. Makeup: highlight the forehead and chin, and keep cheek contouring minimal - the structure is already there.
Face Shape Detection vs Face Search
This tool and our app both start from a photo of a face, but they answer different questions. The face shape detector answers "what are this face's proportions?" - a measurement problem your own device can solve, which is why this page is free and works without an account.
Facial recognition search answers a much harder question: "where does this face appear on the public web?" That requires comparing a face against more than 1 billion indexed faces on cloud GPUs, which is why face search runs in the Facial Recognition app and requires a subscription. We keep that distinction explicit because plenty of tools blur it: measuring a face is cheap, searching the web for one is not.

Is this face shape detector really free?
Yes, completely. The detector runs entirely in your web browser using a small open-source AI model, so there is nothing for us to meter or charge for. No sign-up, no watermark, no credit system - upload as many photos as you like.
Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser once (about half a megabyte), and every step - face detection, landmark placement, and classification - runs on your own device. Your photo is never sent to our servers or anyone else's, and it is discarded from memory when you leave the page.
How accurate is the face shape detector?
It measures real geometry - 68 facial landmarks converted into length and width ratios - so it is far more consistent than eyeballing a mirror. That said, face shapes exist on a spectrum, and many people are a blend of two shapes. Treat the percentage breakdown as the honest answer: if oval scores 46% and oblong 38%, you genuinely sit between the two.
What kind of photo works best?
A sharp, front-facing photo with your whole face visible, taken at eye level in even lighting. Pull hair back off your forehead and jawline, remove glasses, and keep a neutral expression. Tilted heads, big smiles, and heavy shadows all skew the measurements.
Why does the tool estimate my forehead instead of measuring it?
The 68-point landmark model maps the face from the eyebrows down - hairlines vary too much (and are too often covered by hair) for models to locate reliably. The tool estimates total face length using the rule of facial thirds, where the brow-to-chin distance is roughly two thirds of the full face. It is a well-established proportion, but it is why a clear view of your brows matters.
What are the six face shapes?
Oval, round, square, heart, oblong, and diamond. They are defined by four measurements: face length, forehead width, cheekbone width, and jaw width, plus how angular the jawline is. Every face fits somewhere in that system, though many are blends of two neighboring shapes.
Can my face shape change over time?
The underlying bone structure is fixed after early adulthood, but the soft tissue over it changes. Weight gain or loss can move a face between round and oval readings, aging redistributes volume from the cheeks toward the jaw, and hairstyles change what the shape looks like even when nothing underneath has moved.
What if I have a beard or my hair covers my face?
Anything that hides the jawline or brows degrades the measurement. The landmark model will still place points, but it has to guess where the jaw sits under a full beard. For the most accurate reading, use a photo where the jaw outline and eyebrows are clearly visible.
Does it work with multiple people in the photo?
Yes - the detector finds every face in the image and analyzes the largest one, and it will tell you when it has done that. For someone else's face shape, crop the photo so their face is the biggest, or use a solo photo of them.
Is this the same as the face search in the Facial Recognition app?
No, and the difference matters. This page measures your face's proportions locally in the browser and is free. The Facial Recognition app does something different: it searches over 1 billion indexed faces from public web pages to find where a face appears online. That search runs on cloud infrastructure and requires a subscription in the app.
